Garbage Disposal CloggedGarbage disposals are a great thing to have, but you’ve got to make sure that you take good care of them in order to prevent problems. Why is the garbage disposal clogged? Dutton Plumbing is here to educate you on garbage disposal dos and don’ts so that you can take better care of your disposal and save money on unnecessary garbage disposal repairs.
What to Do
After you wash dishes, we recommend pouring a bit of dish soap down the garbage disposal and letting it run for a minute before running cold water down the drain. It’s also a good idea to run your garbage disposal a few times a week in order to prevent corrosion and rust. Doing this is also a good way to keep obstructions from accumulating inside of the disposal.
Why is the garbage disposal clogged? It might be because you don’t run cold water down the drain while you’re grinding up food. The cold water helps any oils and fats that might be in the food to become solid so that they can be disposed of before they reach the trap.
What Not to Do
Don’t put anything in the garbage disposal that’s not biodegradable such as cigarette butts, glass, paper, metal, or flammable liquids. We also advise against disposing of celery husks, corn husks, artichokes, and anything else that’s made up of fibrous materials. The reason for this is that these materials can eventually jam up your garbage disposal and cause the drain to become blocked.
It’s also best that you don’t shut off the garbage disposal or the flow of water until the grinding process is completely finished. When it is done, turn off the disposal first and let the water keep running for at least ten seconds in order to wash away any particles that might remain in the disposal.
