At Dutton, we quote by the job rather than the hour, so the number you get up front is the number you pay. What that number depends on:
Where the problem is.
A valve under a sink is a different job from the same valve inside a wall or under the slab. Access drives more of the cost than the part does.
What the pipe is made of.
Copper, PEX, galvanized steel, and cast iron each call for different methods and materials. Older galvanized in particular tends to reveal more once it is opened up.
One fixture or the system.
A single worn cartridge is straightforward. The same failure at every fixture in the house usually points at pressure or water quality, and that is a different conversation.
How old the fixture is.
Parts for discontinued models are sometimes available and sometimes not, which occasionally makes replacement the cheaper path even when the repair is possible.
We Find the Cause Before We Quote the Fix
Home improvement shows make plumbing repair look like a fifteen-minute job with a wrench and some confidence. Sometimes it is. Other times, the drip under the sink is the last visible stop for water that started somewhere else entirely. We check far enough back to know which one you have before anyone commits to a price.
Most Repairs Don't Need a Second Trip
Cartridges, valves, fill kits, and the parts that fail most often already ride on the truck. A plumber who has to leave for a part is a plumber coming back tomorrow, and we'd rather finish it today.
