Heating and Cooling, One Unit

Experienced Heat Pump Repair in Simi Valley & Ventura County

A lot of heat pump complaints get diagnosed like AC complaints, because a lot of the parts overlap. The ones that don’t overlap, the reversing valve especially, are where that approach falls short.

Dutton Plumbing, Cooling, Heating & Electrical has worked across Simi Valley, Ventura County, the San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita, and Northern LA County since 1987. We train our technicians specifically on that difference, along with all the other nuances of heat pumps. You get a price before any work starts, and it holds regardless of how long the repair takes.

Should You Repair or Replace a Heat Pump?

A heat pump does the work of two systems, which means it also wears out on its own timeline. Four things tend to settle the decision.

Age Against Expected Lifespan

A well-maintained heat pump typically runs ten to fifteen years, a bit shorter than the fifteen to twenty years that a furnace gets, since the same components cycle through both heating and cooling year-round. Under seven years, repair is almost always the right call. Past twelve, you're often paying to extend a system that's close to done.

What Actually Failed

A capacitor, a thermostat, or a refrigerant leak found early are all straightforward repairs on a system that's otherwise sound. A failing compressor or a reversing valve that's not just stuck but worn out is a different conversation.

How Often It's Been Repaired

One repair on a healthy system is normal. A second or third call within a year or two usually means the system as a whole is declining, not just one part.

Whether It's Kept up With the House

Some homes change after the system was sized, such as an addition, a converted garage, or a shift in how many people live there. A heat pump that's never quite kept up may not be failing at all. It may be working exactly as hard as it can for a job that outgrew it.

What to Expect From a Heat Pump Repair Visit

We Check the Parts a Standard AC Doesn't Have

The reversing valve, the defrost control, and the auxiliary heat strips are unique to a heat pump. We check those first instead of last, so you're not paying for time spent ruling out AC causes that don't apply.

You Get a Straight Answer, Not a Guess

We tell you which part failed and why, in plain terms, before quoting the repair. No pressure toward the bigger job.

Common Heat Pump Questions

Heat Pump Repair FAQs from Real Simi Valley Homeowners

How much does heat pump repair cost?

It depends on the failed part and how much access the repair needs. An $89 dispatch fee covers the visit and diagnosis, credited toward the repair if you move forward. From there, we price the repair itself by the job, not how long it will take, so you always know what to expect.

Modern heat pumps handle cold weather better than their reputation suggests, and they're a legitimate option through a Simi Valley winter. What most people are running into isn't a design limitation; it's a system that needs a repair, most often the reversing valve, the defrost cycle, or the backup heat strips not engaging when they should.

Usually, it’s the reversing valve, which controls whether the system heats or cools, and can get stuck in the wrong position. It can also mean the system is in a normal defrost cycle, which briefly runs in cooling mode to clear ice off the outdoor coil. If cold air continues well past a few minutes, give us a call.

Ten to fifteen years with regular maintenance, somewhat shorter than a furnace’s fifteen to twenty, since the components run through both heating and cooling duty year-round. Past that range, a repair is still often possible, but it’s worth weighing against how much life is left in the rest of the system.

Some frost during the heating season is normal, and the system periodically runs a defrost cycle to clear it. Ice that builds up and doesn’t clear on its own usually means the defrost control isn’t functioning correctly, or airflow around the outdoor unit is restricted. If the ice is lingering, give us a call.
