If a water leak goes unnoticed for some amount of time, it can cause a lot of problems down the line. For example, it can increase energy bills, cause dampness in and around the building and prevent your plumbing system from working properly.

If you start to notice anything unusual and you think it has something to do with your plumbing, you need a professional plumber. Read on to find out how to find hidden water leaks in your home.

A Leaking Faucet

Usually, a leaking faucet is generally a result of a worn or damaged rubber washer. The washer on a sink is usually located under the handle and isn’t too difficult to find. They are relatively easy to replace as long you have the right tools. But if you don’t, call a professional plumber. It does require shutting off the water under the sink or at the main shutoff valve and removing the handle which can be tricky to do if you’re not used to dealing with you plumbing system.

A Leaking Toilet

You may not be aware, but toilet leaks can waste hundreds of gallons of water, which can be very expensive. Over time, even a small leak can add up to a lot of wasted water and money. Fortunately, if you use the right plumber toilet leaks tend to be easy and inexpensive to repair.

In order to determine if your toilet is leaking, simply remove the tank lid and place a few drops of food coloring into the tank. Wait for around 30 minutes, without flushing, and then check the toilet bowl to see of any color has come through. If the water is clear, water is not leaking, but if you see food coloring in the bowl, you have a leak.

Flush Handle Problems

If the handle needs to be moved around in order to keep the toilet from running, the flush bar or chain may be stuck or broken. Adjust the nut that secures it in the toilet tank to resolve the issue. However, if that doesn’t work, the handle may have to be replaced by an experienced plumber. Arrange an appointment today by calling us and speaking to a plumber at Dutton Plumbing.
